Just before Americans observe the Thanksgiving holiday, there has been an uptick in gun violence in the city of Chesapeake, which comes after another mass shooting on Saturday night in Colorado that left five people dead at an LGBTQ club.

Leo Kosinski of the Chesapeake Police Department said that rapid response officers and tactical teams entered the store “immediately” after they arrived on the scene. He added that they were able to find multiple fatalities and numerous injured people.

“We think there was a single gunman, and that single shooter is deceased at this moment,” he added, without elaborating on how the suspect died.

While the business was still open, emergency calls began shortly after 10:00 p.m. Tuesday (0300 GMT Wednesday).

There was a large police presence at the site, according to news video, with Kosinski stating many cops and detectives were methodically combing the business and protecting the area.

The precise number of fatalities was unknown. According to Kosinski, authorities estimate no more than ten individuals were slain.

Walmart, the nation’s largest store, published a statement early Wednesday stating, “We are shocked by this awful occurrence.”

The corporation also stated that it was “We are praying for those affected, the community, and our colleagues. We are collaborating with law enforcement and are committed to assisting our colleagues.”

Louise Lucas, a state senator from Virginia, said she was “extremely devastated that America’s newest mass shooting took happened… in my area.” The senator covers the Chesapeake region, which is located 240 kilometres (150 miles) southeast of the US capital Washington.

She declared on Twitter that she would not stop until we found a way to put an end to the scourge of gun violence that has claimed so many lives in our nation.
