In today’s blog we will know about what is dry shampoo? And, how it can cause a cancer. Why big companies recalled their products from markets .Dove was among the well-known brands of aerosol dry shampoo that Unilever Plc had to recall after learning that they were tainted with benzene, a substance that can lead to cancer.
What Is Dry Shampoo ?
Dry shampoo is a product that can be used to clean hair without soaking it. It comes in powder or spray form.
These alcohol- or starch-based sprays, according to Cleveland Clinic, add volume to the hair while removing grease and oils. In addition to coloured powder to match hair colour, certain dry shampoos come in aerosol spray form.
How It Can Causes Cancer ?
Unilever stated that benzene is a human carcinogen while describing the health danger. Leukemia, blood cancer of the bone marrow, and potentially fatal blood diseases can all be caused by exposure to benzene, which can be ingested, inhaled, swallowed, or absorbed via the skin.
Environmental benzene is pervasive. Worldwide, there are several indoor and outdoor sources that expose people to it on a daily basis.”
According to the FDA, daily exposure to benzene at the levels found in the recalled products would not be anticipated to have a negative impact on health.” The EPA did, however, add that benzene exposure can cause leukaemia and other blood malignancies.
According to Cleveland Clinic, dry shampoo shouldn’t be used every few days. Dry shampoo can irritate your scalp, damage your hair, and have an adverse effect on hair growth if used excessively.

Earlier recalls of other items with aerosol content
Spray-on dry shampoo has previously been mentioned as a potential issue. Following Valisure’s findings, P&G tested its entire line of aerosol products in December 2021, at which point it recalled its Pantene and Herbal Essences dry shampoos due to benzene contamination.
We are actively looking into this matter, according to Valisure Chief Executive Officer David Light.
“Given what we’ve seen, it regrettably makes reasonable that additional consumer product categories, including aerosol dry shampoos, could be substantially harmed by benzene contamination.”
Several aerosol sunscreens, including those made by Johnson & Johnson, Edgewell Personal Care Co., and Beiersdorf AG, as well as spray-on deodorants including Procter & Gamble Co.’s Secret and Old Spice and Unilever’s Suave, have been taken from store shelves in the past 15 months, according to Bloomberg. Beginning in May 2021, Valisure, an analytical lab with headquarters in New Haven, Connecticut, discovered benzene in several items, which led to the recalls.
